From Motion Graphics to Code: My First Steps into Processing

As a motion graphics artist, I've always been fascinated by the intersection of art and technology. Recently, I decided to take the plunge into the world of creative coding, and I've been absolutely blown away by what I've discovered. My journey began with Processing, a flexible software sketchbook and language for learning how to code within the context of the visual arts. Let me take you through some of my first experiments and the exciting results they've produced.

Part 1: The First Strokes

My initial coding tests were simple but deeply satisfying. Creating basic shapes and patterns reminded me why I fell in love with visual arts in the first place. The ability to manipulate forms with just a few lines of code felt like unlocking a new superpower.

Part 2: Textures and Folklore

Building on my initial success, I started adding textures to my digital brushes, inspired by folklore. The results were mesmerizing. I found myself unable to stop experimenting, each new combination revealing unexpected and beautiful patterns.

Part 3: The Pendulum Effect

One technique I've always wanted to try but never found a way to achieve was simulating pendulum motion. Coding turned out to be the answer! I created a series of pendulums and then asked the computer to draw using this algorithm. The output was stunning – intricate, organic patterns that seemed to dance across the screen. It's amazing what a few lines of code can do!

and this is what happens when you ask the computer to draw using this algorithm.(I had no idea of the AI revolution that was about to come)

Part 4: Happy Accidents

In the spirit of exploration, I stumbled upon a technique that produced some incredible results. Unfortunately, in my excitement, I closed the program before saving it. While disappointing, it was a valuable lesson in the importance of documentation. The silver lining? I'm excited to recreate and possibly improve upon it in the future.

Part 5: Discovering Perlin Noise

My latest adventure led me to Perlin noise, a technique for generating natural-looking textures and motion. If you're not familiar with it, Perlin noise is a type of gradient noise used to increase the appearance of realism in computer graphics. The effects it can create are truly mind-blowing and open up a whole new world of possibilities for my work.

As I reflect on these first steps into the world of creative coding, I can't help but feel a surge of excitement. Each new discovery feels like unlocking a secret door, revealing endless possibilities for creativity and expression. This journey into Processing seems like just the beginning of a long and thrilling adventure. The fusion of my motion graphics background with these new coding skills is already sparking ideas I never thought possible. I can't wait to see where this path leads and what amazing visuals I'll be able to create as I delve deeper into the world of creative coding.

My first love is still live drawing, explore it here- https://shashrvacai.blogspot.com/2024/08/sketchbook-40-its-always-more-fun-to.html
